Large unidentified flying object...

A more normal blog update - the video took a long time to upload to our YouTube account so I suspect thay will be occasional additions rather than frequent events. Any thoughts as to what you would like to see in the next video let me know...

Today it was cameron and myself around the house, and as requested by the youngest member of the clan a trip to Knuckey Lagoon was called for before the routine shopping, washing and clearing up the mess from last nights quite impressive thunderstorm. Luckily today, being Thursday, is bin day so i was able to fill it with palm fronds etc that had been blown down over night. With none of the windows being double glazed you really get the full effect of the thunder claps - to say the house rattled would be an understatement. How Hamish and Cameron slept through it is beyond me but they did!

Knuckey was quite quiet today - I think it will really come into its own at the end of the dry from late August onwards when everywhere else is drying out and more mud is exposed on the fringes of the lagoon itself.
That said it was still very enjoyable and there was a nice selection of species on offer.
I only took a couple of pictures today, my favourites being:

Paperbark Flycatcher -  a very attractive glossy black and white bird with an amazing call.

Little Corella (very bad picture) that flew across in little groups throughout the morning but focusing on a white bird against an off white sky was interesting.

Knuckey is obviously close to the Australian Air Force base as there were several rather large planes taking off this morning.

Jo over to you as this sort of flying object is way outside my knowledge...

That's all folks!

  1. Well I'm not good at spotting these myself to be honest. 4 jet engines, wide body, low wing, low tailplane, looks like perhaps a DC-8. Only the RAAF don't have them according to the internet - and it doesn't look like any of the ones it does. Didn't know you had a YouTube site - shall try and find it! Off now for a couple of days in Manchester, not back home until late afternoon my time tomorrow then working days over the weekend. Should have some good pix to post on my bog early next week - tomorrow at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, should be a good spot for some interesting shot. Planning on trying my hand at some proper portrait stuff, reflectors and all, using Maria and Vanessa as guinea pigs!

  3. looks like a A20 Boeing 707 tanker/transport variant, but they don't use them any more.. tankers have gone over to Airbus 330 variant (KC-30A). the Yanks bought 3 of the RAAF 707s in 2008....hmm. shall see if i can find a plane-spotter!
    loving the birdlife!
