Lifes' the pits.....

...literally!
There are several antlion pits along the front wall of the house - this really brings back memories of our time in Suffolk as I did my dissertation on the site selection for the pits of Euroleon nostras the only antlion that occurs in the UK. Over here though there are a few more species - probably several hundred!
I shall keep my eyes open and who knows we may get lucky and catch one of the damselfly like adults which I may be able to identify.
On Thursday we got to go behind the scenes at the Darwin Museum Natural History Department. I had met Graham Brown the retired curator of entomology during a photo shoot for the Darwin Parks Dept who were needing some publicity for the network of parks around the city.

Graham then invited us to go behind the scenes which was fascinating. I could have spent all day just looking at a couple of the trays of micro moths! They had a bit of everything there from fossils through to skins and skeletons of birds / mammals. A great but massively under utilised resource.
On returning home we had this beauty in the garden.

a male Danaid Eggfly.

Today before I got on with the house work and before it got too hot we went out to Knuckey Lagoon where the children were able to have a good run around and I was able to do some leisurely birding.
The waterfowl numbers continue to increase with Wandering Whistling Duck in particular increasing rapidly - there are nearly 300 at Fiddlers Lane end alone.
We saw all of the childrens house birds today - Brolga (a crane), Jabiru (a stork) and Pelican.
Also of note were the five White-necked herons feeding along the back edge.
A selection of todays best shots:

Jabiru and Brolga (they were having a right barny just before I took this shot)

Whiote-bellied Sea Eagle

Tish is on a run of four shifts at the moment, her next day off is Tuesday when we are going to go back to Fogg Dam at dusk and try "lamping" for crocodiles, owls and frogmouths with the new lamp we bought that works out of the cigarette lighter in the car!
