Blows and Bats

Continuing with our theme of native weapons Alan knocked on the door this afternoon to suggest a trip to his workshop to build our blowgun - this offer was met as you would expect with great glee by the three youngest members of the Funnell Clan.
I took the camera round as more interestingly one of his native trees had come into flower.
The Phaleria clerodendron sometimes known as the Scented Daphne is a native to the rainforests in northern Queensland and flowers just for a day or so. The flowers are spread evenly throughout the tree including the trunk

We really need a smell blog as well as the scent these flowers give of us beautiful and reminds me strongly of cut pineapple.
The blowgun was a great success although aiming them is far harder than it looks...
No pictures as it is nothing more than a long aluminium tube!

This evening we have had our normal fly past by the Black Flying Foxes that roost in the trees around the Golf Course. As with the Fogg Dam lamping expedition getting decent pictures was very difficult as the shutter speed was necessarily slow to try and cope with the ISO at 1600 so the images are all slightly blurry.

They come across in big streams directly from the roost and then start to break up as individuals head off to their favourite trees to feed, which for a couple of them means the trees in ours and Alan's garden

  2. Cool bats. Are they as big as the ones at Fogg Damn? They were amazing.
I do like the sound of your neighbour Alan, he has really good ideas of useful things to do/make. Right now I'd love to be one of the kids and learn to throw a boomerang or use a blow gun.
